Jack Whitehall on BBC1 comedy show ‘Live at Apollo’

By Iqbal Tamimi

Stand-up comedian Jack Whitehall, who hosted the BBC1 comedy show ‘Live at Apollo’ on 21 January 2012, apparently thinks it is funny to make fun of people suffering mental problems. He made a joke about starting a relationship with a woman, saying ‘at first I thought she must be sexy and interesting’ because she told him that she was ‘bi’. Then he made a gesture with his hand indicating she was ‘crazy’ while saying that he found out that she meant that she has bipolar disorder – a form of depression.

Egyptian women leading riots during the 1919 revolts

by Iqbal Tamimi

It was interesting to notice that the three women, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2011; the Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni human rights campaigner Tawakkul Karman, all were wearing head covers.

It seems that the highest awarding body of one of the most prestigious awards has acknowledged that a head cover does not obscure women’s intellectuality, hinders their progress or mask their contributions to humanity.

News Dissector Danny Schechter

During the Iraq War, the US took aim at AlJazeera. Now, as the information wars heat up between the West and Iran, British regulators have ordered Iran’s Press TV off the air, a move that Danny Schechter says further limits public information about the next looming crisis

The British media regulator OFCOM has pulled Press TV’s license to be seen in the United Kingdom, the same regulator that has done so little to police the methods of Rupert Murdoch’s media practices or BBC’s tilted coverage of the war in Iraq.

Princess Basma Bint Saud bin Abdul Aziz' title on BBC

By Iqbal Tamimi

The Independent and BBC bestowed upon a Saudi Princess the title of a journalist

On 5 January, 2012, The BBC television channel [BBC World], broadcasting in Arabic from London, interviewed Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Saud bin Abdul Aziz to discuss women's rights and the reform process in Saudi Arabia.

We were surprised as Arab journalists to hear the BBC host addressing the Saudi princess a number of times as Her Royal Highness the journalist. Sorry, BBC, I hate to disappoint you.
